10 Tricks from a Cookbook Photographer to Make Photos Yummy
Food can be many things: nourishment, entertainment, and a focal point for fellowship with family and friends, just to name a few. But for the food photographer, it's something else, as well.
Taking beautiful pictures of food can be a wonderful way to scratch that creative itch. So whether you're a newbie to the world of food photography or you've been at it for a while, you're sure to gain something from these tips from cookbook photographer Lindsey Eltinge.

Know Your Equipment
1. Understand how your camera works. If you need to take a basic photography class to learn how to correctly use your camera, do it.
2. There are times when it is ok to hand-hold a camera, and there are times when you need a tripod. Knowing and understanding the difference will improve your images.
3. Don't let the excuse that you can't afford tons of fancy equipment stop you from taking great pictures. Use what you have available. For instance: The value of window light can't be expressed enough. It takes a large studio with a lot of photography lights and equipment to simulate window light. So if you're a photographer working on a budget, you can save a lot of money by shooting under the actual conditions that some people pay big bucks to only simulate.
Keep Photoshop in it's Place
4. This sounds so simple, but I can't stress it enough: Get the picture right in-camera. Never use the excuse that it can be fixed in Photoshop. Photoshop should be for minor retouching, not for major photo manipulation. If your picture is underexposed in-camera, it will never be good. Dont use it!
5. Dont crop in Photoshop. Remember when you bought your camera because it had so many fun fancy features, including how big the pictures are that it takes? When you start cropping your picture, you lose that large file size you paid all of the money to get. Make sure to frame your picture correctly in-camera, on location.
6. Fresh, fresh, fresh! The fresher the food you photograph, the better it will look.
7. Do everything in your power to photograph a perfect picture. Make sure the dish your food is on is clean, the table cloth is ironed, the food is beautiful and appetizing, the lighting is bright and natural, etc. All of that time is what will produce a professional, beautiful food photograph in the end. All that attention to detail will pay off, whether you're taking pictures for a food blog or you're looking to become a professional cookbook photographer.
Keep Getting Better
8. Spend as much time as you can behind your camera photographing food. The more practice you get, the better you will get.
9. Share the pictures you take with your friends and family. Have them critique your pictures and give you suggestions on what they thing would make the picture better.
And Most Importantly...
10. Remember to have fun! "Fresh" doesn't just refer to the kind of food you should be photographing; it's also a good word to remember when it comes to your approach and your perspective. Don't be afraid to try new things. Photograph something you haven't photographed before. Shoot from an angle you haven't tried. Draw inspiration from a new source. All of these things will help keep food photography fun for you. If you're having fun, it will show in your pictures, and it will set your work apart.
